Lifting Applications

Coils

The handling of steel coils requires precision, efficiency, and safety, given the wide range of coil types used in automotive, construction, energy, and manufacturing industries. Improper handling can lead to damage, material loss, and safety risks, making it essential to use the right lifting technology for each coil type.

SGM Magnetics offers two advanced lifting solutions for steel coils:

  • Electro Permanent Magnets (EPR) – Ideal for applications where continuous power supply is not guaranteed, as they retain their lifting force even in the event of a power failure.
  • Electromagnets (EM) – Designed for high-capacity, intensive-duty handling, suitable for both hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils throughout the entire production process.

Which lifting technology to choose?

Types of Steel Coils & Handling Challenges

Hot-Rolled Coils (HRC)

Hot-rolled steel coils are produced at high temperatures and are commonly used in structural applications, pipelines, and shipbuilding. Due to their high temperature and large weight, these coils require heat-resistant electromagnets capable of handling intensive loads under demanding conditions.

Cold-Rolled Coils (CRC)

Cold-rolled coils undergo additional processing for higher surface finish and dimensional accuracy, making them essential for automotive body panels, appliances, and precision components. These coils must be handled with care to prevent surface damage, making EPR magnets the ideal choice for their transportation and storage.

Coated & Galvanized Coils

Steel coils that undergo zinc coating, tin plating, or protective treatments require lifting solutions that prevent scratching or deformation. Electro Permanent Magnets (EPR) provide a secure grip while ensuring surface protection.

Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) & Non-Grain-Oriented (NGOES) Coils

Electrical steel coils are widely used in transformers, motors, and high-efficiency generators. The handling of these coils must be precise and controlled, as any surface damage can affect their magnetic properties. SGM lifting solutions provide damage-free handling, maintaining the material’s performance.

Choosing the Right Magnet for Coil Handling

When to Use Electro Permanent Magnets (EPR):

  • Best suited for cold-rolled and coated coils, particularly for applications where surface protection is essential.
  • Operates without continuous power supply, as it requires only an electrical impulse for activation and deactivation.
  • Ensures no load drop in case of power failure or cable interruption, making it a safe and reliable choice.

When to Use Electromagnets (EM):

  • Suitable for hot and cold-rolled coils, including those in rolling, pickling, zinc coating, storage, and shipment processes.
  • Designed for heavy-duty operations, providing high lifting capacity and durability.
  • Ideal for coils of different sizes and weights, ensuring efficient material handling in steel mills and processing plants.

Key Benefits of SGM Magnetic Coil Handling Solutions

1. Increased Safety & Reduced Manual Labor

Using lifting magnets eliminates the need for chains, slings, or clamps, reducing the risk of workplace accidents. The system allows operators to control the entire lifting process remotely, keeping personnel away from hazardous zones.

2. Damage-Free Handling

SGM magnets grip coils securely by their upper surface, preventing deformation, pressure marks, or surface scratches that commonly occur with mechanical lifting systems.

3. Optimized Storage & Space Utilization

Magnets eliminate the need for wooden spacers between coils, allowing for denser stacking, maximizing storage space, and reducing overall logistics costs.

4. Energy Efficiency & Cost Savings

  • EPR magnets require energy only for activation and deactivation, consuming no power while holding the load, reducing operational costs.
  • Electromagnets are optimized for continuous-duty cycles, ensuring maximum efficiency in large-scale operations.

5. Versatile Handling for All Coil Types

SGM magnets are engineered to lift coils in both horizontal and vertical positions, making them suitable for various handling scenarios in steel mills, storage facilities, and transportation hubs.
