Auto Shredder Residue (ASR)

Every year, million vehicles reach the end of their life and are treated as waste. When end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are not properly managed, they can cause environmental problems and the economy loses millions of tonnes of materials.

The automotive manufacturing industry is among the largest consumers of primary raw materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, and plastics, but makes little use of recycled materials. Although the recycling rates of materials from ELVs are generally high, the scrap metals produced are of low quality and only small amounts of plastic are recycled.

SGM provides a complete range of technological solutions for both cleaning and recovering the ferrous coming off shredders as well as for recovering non-ferrous metals present in the non-ferrous fraction called Auto Shredder Residue (ASR).

With multiple references at car shredder operators all over the world, SGM is a world leader in providing solutions that optimize both metal recovery and purity.

The best solution id often a combination of different best solutions

Drum Magnets

For cleaning and recovering the ferrous coming off the shredder, SGM offers a complete range of mid, large and Mega axial pole drum magnets provided with anodized aluminum strip winding for maximum performance and heat dissipation.

Special proprietary Polishing Drum Magnets are offered for further processing of the ferrous and reduction of the copper content, coming from electrical rotors (“meat balls”) in the ferrous, from the typical 0.3% to below 0.2%.

For the processing of ASR for non-ferrous metals recovery, SGM offers different technologies including a complete range of eddy current separators, sensor based separators, air gravity classifiers, air gravity tables, sand media gravity sorters, colour sorters and X-ray sorters.

For the further processing of the Zorba recovered from ASR, SGM offers, as an alternative to wet media plants, a dry solution made of screens, X-ray sorters and special air gravity tables, designed to separate the light metals (aluminum and Magnesium) from the heavier ones (copper, brass, lead, zinc,…).
